Teaching Your Child to Pray and Trust God

The following is a list of items that our children need to learn about prayer through prayer.

Praise God for Who He is
Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come." Revelation 4:8
• When we model prayer, what adjectives do we use to praise God?

Pray to the heavenly Father
(Mt 6:14, 26,32; 15:13; 16:17; 18:35...)
Our Father in heaven... (Mt 6:9)
• Why is it important that we teach our children to address God as "Our Father" ? (Romans 8:15)

Pray in the Name of Jesus
John 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
• Why is it important that we teach our children to pray in the name of Jesus.

Pray at bedtime and when you rise
Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deut. 6:5-7 .
• Why should we pray with our children when they rise and when they go to sleep. Do you do either?

Pray at mealtimes
Matt. 14:19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
• Why should we bother praying every mealtime. What can we teach our children through this time?

Nothing is too small or too big for prayer
Jer. 32:27 "I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me? "
Matt. 10:29 "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."

Pray for God's Best
Isa. 55:9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Matt. 26:42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."
• Sometimes children do not see answers to their prayers. What do we say in such situations?

Pray in Song
Eph. 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
• How can we pray in song. How can we teach our children to pray in song?

The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed by Thy Name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day, our daily bread.

As we forgive our debtors.
Lead us not in to temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory forever!
Amen.
