Backpacking Equipment
This is a list of personal equipment. It is a general list made for both long and short backpacking trips. Use common sense in selecting things to bring. *You can generally find someone at church from which to borrow the items with a aserisk (*) if you don't have them. The group leadesr will provide the Group Equipment.
Personal Equipment
BASICS
- Backpack*
- Sleeping bag and stuff sack *
- Sleeping pad*
- Hiking boots (if you don't have hiking boots, use high-top basketball shoes)
- Hiking socks (wool works best)
- Thin socks (thin polypropylene liners work well. This is not as important for weekend trips)
PERSONAL ITEMS
- 2 1-liter water bottles (clear plastic water bottles are fine)
- Plastic up, spoon
- Chapstick
- Sun screen
- Sun glasses
- Insect repellant (This is not generally necessary in the end of summer)
- Toilet paper/Kleenex tissue
- Tooth paste and brush
CLOTHES
- Top - (it often gets down to 30 or 40 F at night. The way to stay warm is by layering clothes. You should bring 4 layers as described below)
- T Shirts, thermal underwear or other layer
- Shirt
- Jacket
- waterproof windbeaker, shell, or jacket (It rarely rains, but you should have something waterproof in case it does)
- Warm hat (wool) - A"Beanie" works well. You loose a lot of heat through your head).
- Bottom
- Underwear
- Long pants (hiking pants are best, but jeans are OK)
- For warm weather:
- Shorts (basketball shorts work great. Bring something you can swim in)
OPTIONAL PERSONAL EQUIPMENT
- Small pocket Bible
- LED flashlight (head lamp)
- Camera, film, accessories
- Duct tape
- Pocket knife
- Repair kit (contents may vary)
- Watch
- Sandals or tennis shoes
- Stuff sacks or compression sacks
- Small pouches, ziplock bags, etc.
- Medicines (Please inform counselors)
- Comb
- Pack cover or trash bag to cover backpack in rain
- Some lashing straps or rope to tie things onto pack
- Pen & pad of paper
